Pentecost is the feast of belonging. The message of God’s work of salvation through Jesus was proclaimed to people from all over the world on Pentecost Day. Christians celebrate their oneness as God’s people on Pentecost Day.
When the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles on the first Christian Pentecost, it marked the announcement of God’s new covenant with His new people. The message of God’s work of salvation through Jesus was proclaimed to people from all over the world. When Christians celebrate Pentecost Day, they are celebrating their universal, catholic oneness as God’s people.
Belonging to the community that Christ founded involves faith. Faith is a matter of commitment. God approaches us with love, with His offer to remake us according to the pattern of life of Christ. Our response is to give ourselves to the Lord. Faith gives a sense and meaning to every aspect of what we are.
We have been called and gifted by the infinite generosity of God. We have been called to belong to His people. Our task is to respond, to respond to God’s approach to us in faith, to respond to God’s faithfulness in hope, to respond to God’s love in love.
