Weekly Homily

Thought for the Week

Last Updated: Saturday, April 4, 2009

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and we begin the great week known as Holy Wee. During this week, we commemorate the last hours of Christ's life on earth and His glorious resurrection.

The theme of this week's liturgy is clear.  What Jes experiences for us is a manifestation of God's overwhelming love for each one of us.

Our celebration of Holy Week is not just to be one of memories -- or even just thanks; but of entering together wtih Jesus, inot a new experience of living.

On Palm Sunday, we celebrate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem as the beginning of that fateful week.  His whole life had been a preparation for this final entry into Jerusalem

It was a deliberate choice.  Jesus was deciding to do what had to be done.  He was choosing to fulfill His purpose here on earth.

For His faithful followers, Jesus' entry into Jerusalem is the culmination of the history of the chosen people.  They see in His entry an event that sets the stage for the most climatic and significant drama of all time to take place.

By entering Jerusalem on a donkey and accompanied by the poor and lowly, Jesus is making a definitive statement about what kind of Messiah He is.  He is stating that He is a Messiah for the humble and the destitute, the outcast, the sick, and the disadvantaged.  He is stating that He came to liberate the oppressed, to comfort the broken-hearted, and to heal the sick.  He is the Messiah who comes to save what was lost, to reconcile the sinner with God, and to lead the people into the ways of peace.

He comes not to rule, but to serve and save.  He comes not for glory, but for salvation.
