“Parents have the hardest job on earth!”
Sr. Marion Duggan SC.

As parents, you are your child’s first, most important and influential teacher. Your relationship will be the most significant formative influence your baby ever receives and will affect his or her spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional and physical development throughout  life.

Here at Resurrection, our parenting education program, ParentCare, offers parents knowledge of basic concepts of early childhood development. The curriculum followed is one created by Nina R. Lief M.D., author of “The First Three Years of Life”, which teaches successful parenting techniques. Facilitated by a trained group leader, through a series of one hour discussion groups where parent and child attend classes together, we offer a channel of communication to share experiences with other parents and receive helpful social and emotional support.

Our aim is to foster healthy psychological development through understanding each new level of learning, implementing skills to insure a smooth transition through the stages of your individual child’s growth. We hope to enable you to have a better understanding of the crucial role you have in the unfolding of the child’s personality, especially during the years of “imprinting”, from birth to age three. We help parents to sharpen their listening skills and acknowledge feelings in their children and themselves so that the parent/child relationship is built on mutual respect and unconditional love.

Ideally parents become part of a parenting group when their baby is born.  The groups meet weekly for approximately one hour during the school year.  Typically a group will stay together for three years.

A volunteer who has completed the Archdiocesan training in parenting education facilitates each group.  We discuss developmental stages, techniques for coping with issues such as sleep, tantrums, shyness, separation, sharing and other pertinent topics.  In addition, the parents have a safe place to air their feelings about being a parent – the good and the bad!

The parents who have been part of a parenting group at Resurrection are fiercely loyal to this ministry.  Some of them enroll in an Archdiocesan training session and become group leaders.  Some of our parents have returned to their country of origin and started a Parenting Center in their parish or school.  They want to spread the word.  All of our “graduates” have basic knowledge that empowers them to be the best parents they can.  They know they have the most important job on earth.

The groups meet weekly in the Parenting Center which is in the Education Building next to the Church.  Tuition for the year is $230.00.
